Doctors are people too. In Behind the White Coat, Jefferson City Magazine takes readers beyond the practice to reveal the personal stories of local physicians.

Tyler Alderson, MD | Cardiology/Electrophysiology | MU Health Care

My name is Tyler Alderson, and my roots began just northeast of Jefferson City in Bowling Green, Missouri.

After my parents were married, my father enlisted in the Navy, and they were transferred to Orlando, Florida, where I was born. Over the next 16 years, I lived in six different states and over 16 different homes and farms before settling back in Montgomery County, Missouri. I graduated from Montgomery County High School and then pursued a degree in biology from the University of Missouri. There, my interest in helping my community grew even further. I received my master’s in public health, completing the first-ever research tract certificate. After completing my medical school training with St. George’s Medical School in Grenada, I returned to the University of Missouri to complete my internal medicine and cardiovascular disease training. Electrophysiology took me nearby to the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, Arkansas, for medical sciences with plans to return to Mid-Missouri to begin my practice.

Working within and for my community has always been at my core, and giving back through medicine seemed to be one of the most valued ways I could serve those around me. Helping a patient to understand how to own a diagnosis rather than succumbing to the dread of the outcome is so rewarding. It’s vital to retain a quality of life suitable to your own person, which can look different for different people. Reaching a point of shared decision-making with a treatment plan tailored for that specific individual is my ultimate goal.

Outside of the electrophysiology lab, I am an avid gardener — growing vegetables and flowering plants both indoors and outdoors. This appreciation started as a kid growing up on the family farm and continued through my involvement in FFA. I care for plants from all over the world, and I am an orchid enthusiast. I enjoy outdoor activities, including biking and hiking, with my wife and two daughters. We also spend many weekends at my parent’s cattle farm in southern Missouri.

Jefferson City is rich with history for all Missourians to explore and appreciate. River cities have a unique topography and atmosphere that makes moving through the city enjoyable, and we are so excited to be here.
