Dr. Caleb Steffen, MD, breaks down the benefits of tummy tucks.

For many people, the triumph of significant weight loss comes with an unexpected and often frustrating reality: excess skin left behind by their success. For some people, this can be one of the few drawbacks or roadblocks on the path to healthier BMIs and stronger bodies. The good news, however, is that this extra skin, especially around the abdomen, can be addressed through a procedure known as abdominoplasty, more commonly called a tummy tuck.

Tummy tucks offer various benefits, both cosmetically and for overall comfort and well-being. Dr. Caleb Steffen, MD, with Steffen MedSpa at JCMG, is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. In his experienc, tummy tucks often result in restored confidence, strengthened core muscles, and a reduction in common excess skin concerns, such as painful rashes or sores from prolonged skin-to-skin contact.
“The benefits go beyond aesthetic concerns and do not just conclude with a better-looking core,” Dr. Steffen emphasizes.

People who generally benefit from these surgeries are those who have undergone a drastic weight loss or pregnancy that has left them with less elastic skin around their stomach and an increase in stretch marks.

“For women, pregnancy and weight changes are among the most common reasons to intervene,” Dr. Steffen says. “For men, massive weight loss is the most common reason that I see.”

The procedure often involves four components. The first step in a standard tummy tuck is to remove the abdominal pannus, which extends between the hip bones from the belly button down to the pubic area. This step involves creating an extremely low incision in this region so that any scars are not visible beneath swimwear or undergarments. The second step of a tummy tuck addresses rectus diastasis by tightening and suturing the separated abdominal muscles back together, restoring core strength and a flatter, more supported midsection. These first two steps of the procedure, dealing with the pannus and six-pack muscles, often cannot be corrected with diet and exercise alone, which prompts the need of a tummy tuck. The third step of a tummy tuck is to preserve the belly button and ensure it is returned to a naturally attractive position within the central abdomen. Lastly, the fourth step in this procedure, which is optional, involves liposuction. This procedure is primarily used to shape the waist and abdominal muscles by removing stubborn pockets of fat through small incisions, utilizing gentle suction to create smoother, more defined contours.

“Liposuction is extremely effective, which is why I strongly recommend it,” Dr. Steffen says.
Tummy tucks are among the top three most common plastic surgery procedures, with nearly 170,000 abdominoplasty operations performed each year. They fall into the same category as breast augmentations, breast lifts, and liposuction. Given that it is a common procedure, the post-operative healing process is, for the most part, minimal and straightforward. Most people take two to four weeks off work to recover after a tummy tuck. Exercise can be resumed gradually after the four-week mark to ensure that the abdominal muscles have time to heal properly. Three months after the surgery, patients can resume normal life with no limitations.

By strengthening the core, refining the body’s natural contours, and eliminating excess skin that can lead to chronic irritation, tummy tucks deliver lasting benefits. In the hands of a board-certified surgeon, patients gain not only physical improvements but renewed confidence and comfort in their everyday lives.
