The southern end of Jefferson City is home to some of the busiest intersections in our great city. Amid commuter traffic, state workers on the go, and weekenders heading to the lake, you’ll find city streets filled with beautiful homes and friendly neighbors.
Though recently damaged by a tornado, some of the area has begun to rebuild, with neighbors and neighboring businesses pitching in to help one another. This sense of community is one of the many things I love about Jefferson City.
If you’re shopping in the area for groceries and more, you are probably going to Schulte’s, home to the famous Schulte’s doughnut. Whether you like them plain, cake, filled, or just the holes, they have everything you could think of, and they are amazing! I like the glazed doughnut with a chocolate milk, while my wife prefers the sugared yeast doughnut.
Aside from the to-die-for doughnuts, Schulte’s is great for shopping for the week or even the late-night pick-up. Not only are they a local business, but they’ve also been open since 1958 and have been owned by the same family since inception. Schulte’s represents true community spirit: During the summer, you will find clubs, local baseball and softball teams, skating groups, and more cooking barbecue for fundraisers in the parking lot. The smell alone sometimes is enough for a quick decision about where to eat lunch.
When it comes to dinner and refreshments, the Southside has some hidden gems. Veit’s Pub & Grill really impressed me when I went there for a business function. It’s a little off the beaten path, located on Lorenzo Green Drive, but the space is clean and updated. I was very impressed with the food, and I love the outdoor seating area. They offer a buffet that we’re planning to attend very soon.
If you’ve ever traveled away from home and spent a night or two in a hotel, you know that food can sometimes be scarce or simply not good. We were recently told about Cheerleaders Pub & Grill and had a great experience. When they told me that it was inside of the Holiday Inn & Suites, I didn’t know what to expect, but if you’re looking for a place to get a burger and watch a game you should go check it out. There’s spacious seating, a modern vibe with a calm and laid-back atmosphere, and enough televisions to ensure you don’t miss a single play. My burger and fries were perfect!
In closing, there are so many great places to shop, dine, and live on the Southside. The businesses are friendly, the area is busy, and the neighborhoods are peaceful. If you don’t spend much time on the south end, make a plan for a date night soon — I think you’re going to have a great time!
