Rachel Barfield: Business Development & Office Manager, Genesis Company
Rachel Barfield believes in showing up as her best self every day.
“I read a quote once that said, ‘You only have to be three steps ahead of someone to help them,'” Rachel says. “So, I don’t need to be perfect; I just need to be three steps ahead of someone to help them see the potential within themselves.”
Starting as a receptionist, Rachel grew into her current role over nine years. She knows the business inside and out and is an integral part of Genesis’ positive work culture. She draws upon her experiences in previous roles to better relate to and lead her teams. Rachel credits learning her work ethic from her parents, who she works with at Genesis Company. Rachel gives 100% to everything she does and never shies away from a challenge.
At 27, Rachel faced one of her biggest struggles and turned it into one of her biggest strengths. After being diagnosed with cancer, Rachel chose to use and share her experience to help other women through their battle with cancer. Working with the Red Slipper Warrior Project, Rachel is able to share her business skills while serving on their mission committee and also helps women in her same position by serving as a support group administrator.
During her darker moments, Rachel learned that even when people don’t have a full cup to give, they can still show up every day, and that’s what’s important. Rachel found it helpful to work throughout her cancer treatments to maintain a level of normalcy.
“I think what helped me most at the time was that I had a 3-year-old, so I had to show up every day whether I really wanted to or not,” Rachel says. “I had someone to motivate me and give me a sense of purpose.”
This year, Rachel became a big sister with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Jefferson City. Rachel is excited to develop a relationship with a new little sister through the program.
“I felt like I had more love to give to more children,” Rachel says. “You see so many children in our world who need an extra hand. How can I give back in a small way to another kid?”
Rachel never strives to be perfect; instead, she chooses to show up fully and give her all no matter where she is. This allows her to do her best and also lift up everyone around her. Rachel is grateful to live in Jefferson City, where her community uplifts and supports her.
