Bunions

Common in approximately a third of individuals over the age of 65, approximately 400,000 people seek treatment for bunions annually.

What you need to know

A bunion is a bone prominence at the great toe joint which makes shoe fit and wear difficult due to irritation and pain.

Complications
Bunions cause the great toe to deviate over time, resulting in a painful bone and soft tissue prominence which can worsen when wearing shoes. Bunions result in nerve injuries, limitation in motion, and arthritis.

Treatment
Traditional surgical procedures do not always address the triplane nature of bunions, which can lead to recurrence and unsatisfactory results. It has been documented that bunion recurrence can reach 30-70% following traditional surgery.

The Lapiplasty® procedure provides patients the benefit of a reproducible surgical approach that achieves three-dimensional bunion correction and supports immediate weight bearing. The procedure makes use of specialized instrumentation specifically designed to manipulate and reduce the bunion prior to final correction.

Benefits of Lapiplasty®:
• The use of biplanar plate fixation of the correction site makes immediate weight bearing in a cast boot possible.
•Other types of bunion surgery can require patients to be inconvenienced by the need for weeks of non-weight bearing and crutches. Our Lapiplasty® patients typically return to shoes 6 weeks after surgery.
• It allows for minimal bone removal which reduces the risk of significant bone shortening, as well as reducing post-surgical pain.
• It corrects the deformity in three dimensions and realigns the metatarsal bone and reduces the bunion, making it much more effective at treating them than traditional treatments.
• It corrects the root cause of bunions and reduces the risk of deformity recurrence.
