HASLAG LANDSCAPE & DESIGN
SPECIALIZED LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTING
Your Own Way
What is the name of your business? Haslag Landscape & Design because of my last name and I feel associating your name with your business is more personal.
What is your product or service? We are a landscape construction contractor specializing in custom outdoor living areas. (Stamped patios, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, fire pits, etc.)
When did your business get started? I started my business five years ago in 2016, shortly after graduating from the commercial turf and grounds program at State Technical College. To be honest, I didn’t intend to start a company originally. But as I did a small project here, and another one there, things began to snowball. With the support of family and friends, I decided to take the leap, and things have skyrocketed since.
Why did you decide to base your business in Jefferson City? I was born and raised in the Jefferson City area. I love Jefferson City and the people in it. It is a big small town with a tight-knit community.
How do you define success and how do you celebrate a win? I define success as having a positive impact on my family, friends, and community. I love being involved and helping out others. When a business is successful because of a community, it is only right to give back. We have had huge success our first five years and celebrate by continuing to offer the same quality and commitment to our customers and community.
What’s been your biggest failure/struggle and how did you overcome it? My biggest struggle has been learning to balance work and personal life. As any business owner knows, it’s a 24/7 lifestyle. To overcome that struggle, I’ve learned to structure my daily and weekly schedules — especially with start and finish times. I have found that staying organized and keeping a structured schedule helps not only with productivity, but with the stresses of balancing home and work life.
What kind of culture exists in your organization and how did you establish it? I try to establish a winning culture in my business. All of my employees and I take great pride in our work and the attention to detail we provide. We strive to be the best at what we do and do not settle for less.
What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur? Organization, communication, and positivity.
What’s your favorite part of your business? The transformations we do to people’s homes and the happiness it brings them and their families.
