Owner, Haslag Landscape and Design

This year, Jefferson City Magazine recognizes 10 Ones To Watch—a group of up-and-comers who are not only high-character individuals, but who also have achieved things that have bettered the community. This group inspires through faith, drive, and dedication, and they have shown effective leadership in both their professional and personal involvements.

Mentorship, work ethic, technical skills, and the ability to enjoy the simple things in life enable Nick Haslag to serve his community with a growth mindset.

I’m 26 and from the small town of Russellville. After graduation from Russellville High School, I received my degree in commercial turf and grounds from State Technical College of Missouri. I started my company, Haslag Landscape and Design, in 2016 after graduation from State Tech. To this point, my life has been about successfully building my company and family while trying to have a positive influence on my community. I serve my community through action and support. I try to be as interactive in different groups and causes as I can be. In doing this, I have met a lot of new and amazing people who have the like-minded goal of making Jefferson City a great place to live. Professionally, Haslag Landscape and Design sponsors all kinds of ball teams, events, and causes that benefit youth and the community. I feel this is a way of doing my part to support and serve.

DREAM INTERVIEW
I would like to sit down and talk with Warren Buffet. He has always been a positive influence — not only in a business aspect but through his philanthropy and his emphasis on surrounding yourself with the right people and positive relationships. I would ask him about constructive business practices and how he takes advantage of business opportunities.

GRATITUDE
I’m most grateful for the positive influences I’ve had in my life.

ON GOALS
My yearly goals to this point, in a business aspect, have been to continue to grow and expand. This ranges from equipment and reputation to employees and the benefits we can over to help keep and add amazing people.

ON FRIENDSHIP
I have been blessed with some amazing friends. The awesome thing about having these friends is the trust that you will always be there to support and encourage each other.

ON MENTORSHIP
My mother is my greatest mentor. She taught me and my siblings the importance of honesty, humility, kindness, and work ethic. She taught me that no matter what the task is, do it the right way and to the best of your abilities.

MOST PEOPLE HAVE IN COMMON
I think what most people have in common is the desire to do the right thing and treat people with kindness.

LEAVING A LEGACY
I’d like to be remembered as a leader and positive influence in my profession and community.
