President, Mid America Bank

Job description: I serve in the capacities of the chief executive officer, president, and chairman of the board of Mid America Bank.

Education: Fatima High School, Central Missouri State University (now University of Central Missouri) with a degree in agriculture and business, and the University of Missouri for graduate school.

Professional background: I have been a community banker my entire career, starting with Midwest Independent Bank and Belle State Bank. I’ve served on several bank boards and helped start three new banks: Progress Bank, in Sullivan; Branson Bank; and Lone Summit Bank, in Lee’s Summit.

Tell us about yourself: I am a church-going family man. I have a passion for the outdoors and farm life. I grew up in Meta, Missouri, where my favorite activities included playing baseball, riding bicycles with the neighborhood kids, and swimming in the Sugar Creek.

Why I’m passionate about what I do: Helping people — my customers, associates, and family members — achieve their dreams.

What people should know about what I do: It is not just me. Our group of associates works together in a way that makes my job easy. I work for two tremendous families.

Why I’m passionate about my community: Central Missouri is a great place to raise a family. People care for each other and are very willing to help one another.

What’s next? We’re looking forward to expanding our bank into other markets.

If I weren’t doing this for a living, I would: Spend more time outdoors and travel with my wife.

Family: Wife of 37 years, Kim, and three grown children: Katie and her husband, Ian, and their daughter, Ava; Tyler and his wife, Gretchen, and their son, Owen (and baby number two arriving in December); and Connor.

Favorite place in Jefferson City: The State Capitol museum. The museum offers so much history about our state. I also love Riverside Park. I love to watch the ice flow in the spring, and I have many good memories of family gatherings at the park.

Accomplishment I’m most proud of: My family.

Most people don’t know that I: Love to sing in the choir at church, although I am not a very good singer.

Last book you read: “Unthink” by Erik Wahl. It is about rediscovering unconventional thinking and business management.

What has been the greatest lesson you have learned throughout your career? Simply trust your gut — that’s the short answer. Also, have as many mentors as you can find.

What is your most memorable holiday tradition? Growing up, Christmas Eve was always centered around Mass. My dad always sang in the choir, so he would always invite the choir to our home each year.

What’s your favorite community activity or project? Our church picnic every June. It’s a fundraiser for the church and brings the community together to work and share time.

Favorite place to vacation to? We love to go to the low country around Charleston, South Carolina. The beaches are firm, so I love to run on the beach, and you can actually bike on the beach as well.

Favorite app: The weather app.

Favorite comfort food: Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy.

Favorite musical artist of the moment: I listen to mostly artists and tunes from the ’70s.

Source of inspiration: My faith and my family.

Best way to spread holiday cheer: Giving to those in need.

Favorite quote: “Everybody’s deal is different.”
