Kristin Schroeder: The Face of
Cabinetry and Lighting

How did it all start for me? In high school, I was a constant furniture rearranger in our home, and then one day, I had the opportunity to help my parents design their new kitchen. I knew then that this was what I wanted to do with my life. After going to college at Mizzou and working at two local lumber yards, I decided to venture out on my own, and here I am 17 years later. I have been designing kitchens for over 30 years, and I love that I am now in a phase where I get to remodel the same clients’ kitchens I did 15 to 20 years ago, but with fresh new colors.

I come from a long line of hard workers, and I live by my parents’ golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” which resonates with me to this day. My other full-time job at home is working alongside my husband, Jason, and kids, Austin and Cole, on our family cattle farm, Schroeder’s Black Herefords. I always say I go to my “town job” to rest up a little from farm life. Work ethic runs strong in our family.

What I enjoy most about my cabinetry and lighting career is I get to do everything. I love meeting with clients, taking onsite job measurements, ordering and receiving materials, and even unloading the cabinets and lights. It is important for me to be a part of every aspect. I take my client’s visions and then walk them through every aspect of their kitchen, how it will be used, what they will store, and how they will organize it. And, of course, we walk through the different door styles, colors of paint or stain, and all the countertop options. Then, we add the “jewelry of the kitchen,” so to speak, which includes things like the hardware, island lights, and even under-cabinet lighting. At LaBelle, we love helping our clients narrow down their search for lighting design when there are so many options online and at large box stores. We specialize in personalized service, so I like to make the process easy and fun while learning about clients’ personalities so we can help them choose the perfect lighting.

I am still learning and experiencing new things every week through designing, farming, and traveling; and I love bringing that inspiration into my work. My greatest advice for others is to work hard, play hard, and follow your arrow!
