Doctors are people too. In Behind the White Coat, Jefferson City Magazine takes readers beyond the practice to reveal the personal stories of local physicians.

John Rocket, MD | Internal Medicine and Pediatrics | Community Health Center

My name is John Rockett. I knew early on that I wanted a career that combined science, problem-solving, and helping others. The field of medicine, with its ability to impact lives and make meaningful connections, was the natural fit. I ultimately chose to dual specialize in internal medicine and pediatrics because it offers the unique opportunity to care for patients across their entire lifetime, giving me the privilege of being involved in a person’s health through all stages of life.

In my practice, the most rewarding part of my job is building strong, trusting relationships with my patients and their families. There’s something special about walking patients through their health challenges while offering guidance and support along the way. It’s these connections that keep me motivated and remind me why I chose this path.

I see patients as individuals with their own unique stories; it’s my job to listen and figure out what is needed to help. Patients come in with unique experiences, and if you don’t take the time to truly listen and understand what they’re saying, you’ll miss the important details that can make all the difference in their diagnosis and treatment. Good listening isn’t just about hearing words; it’s about understanding the full picture and how everything fits together.

Outside of work, my favorite hobby is collecting new hobbies, which helps me unwind and stay engaged outside of the office. Recently, I’ve taken up building and collecting guitars — a hobby that combines creativity and craftsmanship. I also enjoy training my dogs and reading. I’ve learned that no matter how busy or challenging things get, it’s essential to stay grounded and connected to both your patients and yourself. The work is never done, but I continue to find ways to stay engaged, balanced, and focused on what truly matters.
