A closer look at the benefits of microdermabrasion and dermaplaning
Skincare has become a monumental movement across social media platforms. Makeup trends tend to evolve rapidly over time, but in recent years, people have started to look more closely at the base of their beauty routine – the blank canvas beneath the artistry of cosmetics. Smooth, vibrant, hydrated skin has become one of the most sought-after beauty must-haves. One of the things that has become increasingly popular in the pursuit of glowing skin is microdermabrasion. Meredith Krueger with Respiro Spa in Jefferson City explains what exactly this procedure entails and outlines the benefits.
“Essentially, microdermabrasion is a more effective way to exfoliate the skin because it removes dead skin cells more efficiently…” Meredith states. “Removing the buildup of dead skin and debris on the surface of the skin helps people achieve a flawless ‘airbrushed’ makeup look as it allows makeup to be applied more evenly.
In the most basic sense, microdermabrasion is a type of mechanical exfoliation that is far stronger than any store-bought products, such as face washes or sugar scrubs.
“The process of microdermabrasion uses a machine that has a bit of suction to adhere to the skin,” explainss Meredith. “The stronger the suction, the more intense the exfoliation. It also uses grit, like sandpaper almost, to remove skin cells.”
“They’re all customizable at the spa, and by getting

a stronger form of exfoliation, patients
can truly get the most out of their booked facials.”
There is another process that goes with microdermabrasion known as dermaplaning.
“Dermaplaning is another form of mechanical exfoliation that removes the dead skin cells as well as the vellus hair that resides on a person’s face – otherwise known as ‘peach fuzz’,” describes Meredith.
It is important to note that dermaplaning is not necessarily considered ‘relaxing’ as it does require technique, a sharp scalpel-like blade, and precision to ensure the procedure is done efficiently.
These procedures are beneficial because makeup application becomes easier and more professional looking, and skincare products – acne wash, moisturizer, toner, serum – are absorbed into the skin more thoroughly, allowing them to perform their intended function more easily.
At Respiro Spa, Meredith and her team perform additional services that can be added onto their exfoliation procedures. These services include hot stone, salt scrub, Swedish, and deep tissue massages; relaxing facials; waxing services; and chemical peels. Patrons can book a single service or combine services for ultimate skincare.
“All the services offered at Respiro, especially the microdermabrasion and dermaplaning services, can be beneficial to anyone who is looking to enhance their facial services,” Meredith says. “They’re all customizable at the spa, and by getting a stronger form of exfoliation, patients can truly get the most out of their booked facials.”
Dermaplaning can be done every four weeks, and microdermabrasion can be done every two weeks. They are often combined with a chemical peel to boost the results.
Skincare is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, so it’s important to utilize trusted facilities like Respiro Spa for these procedures. When completed by professionals, they truly are a wonderful way to attain beautiful, subtle, and easy summer skin.
