This custom home feels like a getaway in the Colorado mountains.
Walking inside this custom home in the bluffs across the bridge, you might think you’re still outdoors. With floor-to-ceiling windows, various natural-looking materials, and fantastic forest views, you feel as though you’ve stepped through a portal into the middle of some Colorado woodlands.
The owners of this luxury lodge had a definite vision for their home from the start. “When we bought the land, we wanted something that felt like a hideaway, but was still close to home,” the homeowner says. “We also knew we wanted the Colorado lodge-type house. I wanted the rustic look, but more contemporary.”
The vaulted ceilings and almost seamless transitions from the great room to the covered deck easily reach the rustic–contemporary look. Every room is painted in warm colors with either plush carpets or dark wood floors. Rooms without carpet have gorgeous rugs, picked by the homeowner, that pull together decor with color. The granite island in the kitchen perfectly reflects the natural light coming through the wall-width window over the kitchen sink. The double-sided stone fireplace provides warmth and style to both the great room and the dining room.
Angie Zimmerman, designer, and Scott Schaeperkoetter, builder, have been with the homeowners from the beginning. “I remember sitting down with the homeowner for the first time,” Zimmerman says. “She came out of the gate with luxury mountain home magazines that we sat and planned with for four hours.”
That session began a nearly five-year process, from drawing up plans to finding and buying the land to going through the actual construction.
“We decided to go with Signature Homes after they had redone the basement in my previous home. We picked out a room in a magazine, the great room, and planned from there,” says the homeowner. “I took that image of the room to Scott, and he drew it up. It was exactly what I envisioned. Once the plans were drawn up, there were very few changes.”
The homeowners wanted their home to feel like a part of the landscape. Once an appropriate spot was chosen, only the necessary number of trees were removed, amplifying the feeling of intimate isolation. From every one of the giant windows in the home, there are breathtaking natural views.
Each material used was carefully chosen by the homeowners and the designer together. Some of the materials even have a personal value. The mantel piece on the double sided fireplace, for example, came from a barn owned by the homeowner’s parents. The red, wing-backed chair belonged to the owner’s grandfather. The rug in the great room was purchased from a hotel by the homeowner’s grandmother.
“There’s a lot to be said for working with someone who knows what they want,” says Zimmerman. From conception to completion, the owners, designer, and contractors worked together to create a home that fits a dream.
