Merging classical design with personal touch
When Marcia Willing and Joe DeLong began designing this delightful contemporary craftsman home in 2018, they instantly knew they wanted the home’s exterior to blend well with the surrounding historical homes featured throughout their neighborhood. But stepping inside, you’re undoubtedly surprised by a bright array of color and a multitude of beautiful photos and artwork all collected throughout years of traveling.
From paintings that resemble her children ice skating in winter, an intricate glass plate purchased during a trip to Israel, a painted bowl and vase from Hawaii that were broken and delicately put back together, and a one-of-a-kind hand-painted bench that Marcia found in Cedar Rapids, each piece comes with a personal story. Perhaps the most personal of the collection is a paper collage by nationally known artist Gloria Zmolek Smith. Having seen her intricate works throughout the University of Iowa, Marcia specially commissioned this piece to depict symbols of her Jewish faith. “It turned out absolutely perfect,” Marcia says.
Working with a talented contractor and designer to complete her vision, Marcia was able to create a serenity for both her and her cats, Millie and Sophie. It goes to show that while many people may be able catch a glimpse of a home’s exterior, it’s what’s in the inside that can surprise you.
