Being involved in supporting others and cultivating positive experiences is what keeps communities strong,” says Angela Schmitz-Bax, owner of East and West Co., an apparel retail store, and co-owner of She’s Native, a seasonal surprise box showcasing local talent and businesses. “Whether it is philanthropic or for pure entertainment, being involved allows for further growth in the community.”
As a catalyst for growth, Angela partners with charitable endeavors and committees around town, employing a contagious combination of service and joy as she utilizes her company to give back. As a health coach and group exercise instructor, Angela gives her time and knowledge to help others through their health journey and teach about healthy eating. Whether she is supporting the American Heart Association or HALO, Angela’s support for others is undeniable, as illustrated in her willingness to talk to anyone, listen with an open mind, sympathize with a nurturing heart, and accept people without judgment.
Her heart of service is forever at work, striving to engage, enable, and empower others. Her commitment to the community is also clear, as she is always striving to improve the quality of life in Jefferson City by promoting other local businesses in nearly everything she does. The energy powering her community activism is something of a marvel.
“Relationships are vital for survival both personally and professionally,” she says. “My family, friends, and dreams for my future fuel me.”
Relationships and role models are also vital to her success; it’s no wonder she’s had strong mentorship from the start.
“My mother is my role model because she’s a hustler, wife, mother, and ‘Mimi,’ and she will go to the ends of the Earth for those she loves,” Angela says. “She is smart, independent, and someone I am blessed to call mom.”
With these attributes as an example, Angela has created a network of forward-thinking supporters.
“I feel extremely blessed to know and work with the people in my life,”she says. “I have some pretty incredible boss babes who cheer me on!”
Committing to community and investing in relationships has given Angela the perspective to look back on many of her life’s own challenges as triumphs she’s had to endure and overcome, providing her the opportunity to grow her love for her family, friends, and network along the way.
