Water aerobics at Ellis-Porter Riverside Pool becomes a summer tradition for a dedicated group of Jefferson City residents.

Looking for a way to stay active this summer while beating the heat? A dedicated group gathers at Ellis-Porter Riverside Pool for a workout that combines fitness, friendship, and a healthy dose of sunshine.

JC Parks and Recreation’s water aerobics class meets Monday through Friday from 7:45-8:45 a.m. and welcomes adults of all fitness levels. The low-impact workout uses the natural resistance of water to help participants improve strength, balance and cardiovascular health.

Water aerobics is especially appealing for those with arthritis, joint pain or injuries. Participants can work at their own pace, swimming experience is not required, and any equipment used during class is provided.

For many, however, the benefits go beyond exercise.

Wanda Schaffer has participated in water aerobics at Ellis-Porter Riverside Pool for 10 years. She says instructor Laney Clemens’ energetic leadership and the opportunity to exercise outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine with friends keeps her coming back each summer.
The social aspect of the class is a recurring theme among those who attend.

“The level of exercise is great for seniors, with options to work out at either a low or high impact,” says Sue Hilkemeyer. “The music is fun and always upbeat. But most of all, the camaraderie is the best part of the class.”

Hilkemeyer also appreciates the early-morning schedule, which allows participants to fit exercise into their day while still leaving time for other activities.

For Peggy Landwehr, the class has become one of the highlights of summer.

“Laney has lots of different routines that really tone your body if you give it your all,” Landwehr says. “I’ve done water aerobics for years, but I wasn’t getting as good of a workout before joining her class.”

One chilly morning, when temperatures dipped to 53 degrees, Landwehr remembers turning to her husband before leaving for class. “I said, ‘I can’t believe I’m doing this.’ My husband said, ‘I can’t believe you are either!’ But I did,” she says. “It’s a wonderful way to get morning sunshine, great exercise and to see friends.”

Often, it’s those friendships that keep people coming back year after year. At Ellis-Porter Riverside Pool, water aerobics has become more than a workout. For many, it’s a summer tradition.

To join the class, sign up through The Linc. Classes are included with Linc and SilverSneakers memberships. Nonmembers may attend for $9 per class.
