Bruce Gibbs’ Journey from Jefferson City to Industry Leadership
Growing up in Jefferson City, Missouri, Bruce Gibbs dreamed of a life working the land.
““I wanted to be a farmer,” he says, remembering long days spent on his grandfather Edgar’s farm. “I loved being on the tractor.”
At just 16, Bruce managed 100 acres that his father purchased, and he did it well. Still, with encouragement from his father and neighbors, he pivoted from agriculture and began on a path that has led him to build one of the Midwest’s most respected tech and office solutions companies.
In 1999, Bruce founded and became president of GFI Digital, a company with over 400 employees, 13 office locations, and more than 50,000 machines under maintenance. His journey from farmer to industry leader is a result of his values: hard work, grit, and mentorship.
“I’ll always value growing up in Jefferson City and being close with the families who shaped my life from kindergarten through senior high,” Bruce says, crediting much of his early discipline and drive to his experience in Jefferson City’s football program under legendary coaches Pete Atkins and Ron Cole.
But the most influential role models in Bruce’s life were his parents, Hallie and Karen Gibbs. Hallie established Modern Business Systems through relentless dedication, and Karen always encouraged open con versations around business and life at home.
“My dad lived like failure wasn’t an option,” Bruce says. “He taught me the importance of building great relationships — with manufacturers, banks, customers, and most of all, employees.”

Bruce got his first real taste of business before he graduated from high school, selling Kirby vacuum sweepers for Randy Valkart. A few years later, he attended Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas, and then he earned a spot as a salesman at Modern Business Systems — without any shortcuts from his father. He was sent to work in Springfield, Missouri, under the guidance of trainer Jimmy Q, where he quickly found his stride.
“That first summer of grinding at sales while I was so young is the reason I am the leader I am today,” he says.
In 1991, Bruce moved to Chicago, Illinois, to lead Modern’s new market there. Over the next eight years, he helped grow it from $2 million to $30 million in revenue. That success laid the groundwork for his next move — launching his own business. Encouraged by his brother, Hal, and friend Ron Dawson, Bruce seized the opportunity.
“Hal and Ron were doing real estate transactions and planning to open office locations for IKON across the country,” he explains. “As they explored that opportunity, Ron realized the other offices didn’t operate like I did in Chicago and encouraged me to go out and do this on my own. When I learned Sharp’s Missouri territory in St. Louis was available, it seemed like a no brainer.”
“The first several years were a struggle. But I knew, like my dad, that failure was not an option.”

Because of a conflict of interest, Bruce couldn’t consult his father about his endeavor since his father had a lifetime contract with IKON. Still, he forged ahead. With investments from siblings Hal, Tami, and Pam, he launched GFI Digital — short for Gibbs Family Investment on May 5, 1999.
“The first several years were a struggle,” Bruce admits. “But I knew, like my dad, that failure was not an option.” Since then, each investment has been bought out through the buy/sell agreement that was put together at the beginning, and many milestones have been achieved.
In 2002, GFI Digital acquired talent from IKON’s closing Jefferson City customer service center, which became the company’s new administrative hub. Pam, Norma, Connie, Mary, and Chris became the nucleus of that operation and now lead the more than 75 employees in the Jefferson City location today.

In 2011, Bruce acquired Advanced Image Systems, the company of his lifelong friend Rob Goth. Rob remained with the organization, and Bruce credits much of GFI Digital’s continued growth to the leadership and contributions of both Rob and Corey Backues, who play pivotal roles within the company. Four years later in 2015, GFI Digital expanded its offerings by launching managed IT services — a division that now supports over 13,000 endpoints and employs more than 100 dedicated professionals.
Through it all, Bruce has maintained a strong relationship with Central Bank — an important piece of advice he shares with young entrepreneurs.
“When people ask me what the hardest thing is about owning my own business, I think about cash flow,” he says. “My experience with working in successful organizations has taught me to be ready for high growth and learn to manage banking relationships well. My dad had a strong relationship with the Cook family at Central Bank, which led to a wonderful experience for him along the way. I was fortunate to have that example and have gone from always looking for a larger line of credit to now sitting next to Bryan Cook in Central Bank’s monthly board meetings in St. Louis. My best advice is to understand that you will need more cash flow than you realize, so nurture your banking relationship.”
Despite all of his professional success, Bruce points to his family as his greatest accomplishment.
“My biggest success in life is having my wonderful wife, Corrie, by my side and raising four incredible daughters,” he says.

His daughters Sarah, GFI Digital’s controller, and Caroline, GFI Digital’s marketing and event coordinator, work alongside him daily. And, with more than 26 years in business, Bruce isn’t slowing down; he is focused on succession planning and culture-building.
“I’m excited to mentor the next generation to keep GFI Digital a top workplace,” he says.
GFI Digital’s mission remains unchanged: to develop and support their customers and employees through our commitment to service excellence. Their core values, accountability, balance, integrity, self-motivation, and fun, are principles Bruce lives by.
In time, Bruce hopes to reduce his 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. schedule, but not his involvement.
“I look forward to seeing GFI Digital continue to grow with the passion and grit we’ve had for so many years,” he says.
